What is an IFTA?

IFTA is the International Fuel Tax Agreement which is the base state fuel tax agreement instituted by the federal government. Rather than having the carrier register with each individual jurisdiction for fuel tax reporting, the carrier now registers just in its base state, and the base state distributes the taxes to all other jurisdictions the carrier operates in both in the U.S. and Canada. Under IFTA all vehicles 26,001 lbs. or more, and operating in at least one other jurisdiction besides the base state, must be registered and report fuel tax under IFTA. IFTA issues two decals per power unit as proof of registration.
